🧶 How to Care for Your Knitwear

Knitwear is made to be cherished. With the right care, your favorite piece can stay beautiful and last for years. Here’s how to give your knitwear the love it deserves:

🌬 Airing: wash less, wear more

Wool is naturally self-cleaning—it neutralizes odors and absorbs moisture. That means it doesn't need to be washed after every wear.

After wearing, let your knit rest for 1–2 days in a well-ventilated area or a damp bathroom. Often, simply shaking out your garment or laying it flat overnight is enough to freshen it up.

🧼 Spot Cleaning

Stains? Rinse them with cold or lukewarm water as soon as possible. If needed, dab (don’t rub!) the spot gently with a damp cloth and a little wool detergent. Avoid harsh stain removers or anything containing bleach—these can damage delicate fibers and dull colours.

 🧺 Machine Washing

Many knits can be washed in the machine—but always check the care label first.
General guidelines:

  • Use cold or low temperatures (max. 30°C)
  • Select the wool or delicate cycle
  • Use a gentle, wool-specific detergent
  • Place the item in a wash bag
  • Wash with similar colours

🫧 Hand Washing

Hand wash is the safest choice for delicate items:

  • Use lukewarm water and a mild detergent
  • Don’t mix colours
  • Gently swirl your garment (don’t rub or scrub)
  • Let soak for 15–30 minutes
  • Rinse carefully in clean water

🧴 Detergent Tips

Use a mild detergent — preferably one made for wool and containing lanolin. Lanolin helps preserve wool’s natural softness and self-cleaning abilities.
Avoid using fabric softener, as it coats the fibers and reduces wool’s ability to breathe and absorb.

🌬 Drying

Never wring or hang your knitwear when wet — it may stretch or lose shape.

  • Gently roll the garment in a towel to squeeze out water
  • Reshape and lay flat on a dry towel or drying rack
  • Avoid tumble dryers
  • Mohair can be gently brushed with a mohair comb to restore fluffiness

📦 Storing Your Knitwear

Avoid hanging knitwear — it stretches. Instead:

  • Fold and store in a clean, dry place
  • For seasonal storage, use breathable cotton or canvas bags (no plastic)
  • Ensure garments are clean before storing—food stains and body oils attract moths.

🪵 Add a piece of cedarwood or a few drops of cedar oil to keep moths away.

🧵 Small Repairs

Snagged a thread? Don’t worry — you can gently pull it to the inside of the garment with a needle or crochet hook and tie it off. Avoid cutting it — this may cause holes.

A small hole? Learn to darn it yourself or take it to a local repair specialist. Visible mending can even add character—find inspiration on social media!

Wrinkles

Avoid ironing knits—it crushes the fibers. Instead, use a steamer to refresh your garment and gently lift out wrinkles. Steaming can even postpone the need for washing.

🧶 Pilling

All natural fibers pill over time—especially soft, luxurious wools.
Friction causes small balls of fluff to form. Use a pilling comb, fabric shaver, or sweater stone to gently remove them. With proper care, you’ll keep your knits looking fresh and beautiful.
